Shenandoah Cabin
Type
Single Family Residence, Reconstruction and Addition
Location
Rural Virginia
Description
Set in a tiny, rural-Virginia hamlet of historic structures, this new home combines a small reconstructed historic two floor log cabin with a historically inspired addition which tripled the cabin’s original size. The owner’s desire to achieve period inspired details made the project a joy to work on.
The cabin portion is just one room with a stone fireplace on the first floor and one bedroom with a small new bath shoe-horned in on the second floor. The new addition on the first floor includes a winding stairway, a large eat-in kitchen, a half bath a side entry, a small home office, a covered porch and stone terrace with sweeping views of the country side. The second floor is a generous new primary en-suite bedroom.
The “magic” came in the details both outside and within. Custom made new kitchen cabinets resemble old country pieces with weathered finishes assembled in an “unfitted” way with the convenience of modern gourmet appliances. All the interior walls are sheathed with painted tongue and groove siding - no drywall was allowed.
The master bedroom vaults up to the underside of the roof and includes a reproduction 18th cent. style built-in fireplace wall of panels and bookcases. The two-part master bathroom includes dry sink style vanity cabinets, and a pebble-stone lined shower room with a claw-foot tub next to a window which views an intimate court yard.
